Nook eBook reader revealed

Now this is a clever bit of lateral thinking. Use a slow refresh eInk display for the book reading to maximise battery life, but also employ a full colour OLED LCD touch screen for keyboard, navigation and search etc. Best of both worlds. This also negates the need for a shiny(ish) touchscreen layer on the eInk display. It's totally matte.

Looks a nice device. Makes the Kindle look obsolete. I bet Amazon are really worried. There are a lot of hacked off people who have just got a Kindle!

Will handle ePub format. Kindle really dropped the ball on that score. Why don't companies still get that people hate proprietary format only devices!

Pity it is US only or I'd have one!

I'm sure they will start appearing in other countries if there's a demand. After all, I got a PRS-500 before Sony ever distributed them in the UK.

And my first impression is that I want one. Oh, yes. But my recent experiences have taught me to be wary of first impressions. The dual screen gives this unit the potential to revolutionize ebook reading. But only if it's properly implemented, and I've seen an awful lot of gadgets recently that have failed to live up to the potential offered by their own hardware. So I think I'll be waiting to see what other people think. One slight disadvantage of the Nook compared to the PRS is it's much shorter battery life -- 10 days or so, against 30-40 days. What other disadvantages there might be, we'll have to wait and see, I guess.
