Do those hacks actually work on the 505? I had heard that Sony had `done an Archos' and closed the whole that made it possible to insert code via an SD card? Or has someone discovered another way in?

Yes, the hacks are installed via a SD card. They work on the US firmware, but not the UK version yet. I could flash to the US version, but not sure whether that will stuff the Waterstones eBook buying.

Hopefully the guy who has written the flash utility will do his magic on the UK firmware.

First step you have to do AutoLoad.XML piece that makes re flashing from a memory card , put status disable . so we'll need a new way to apply new firmwares.
Imagine actual code adjustments themselves will almost still more or less work, perhaps with some minor tweaking.Last you will get one messages "thank you" for what he's already done if nothing else.
