Organizing photos in folders?

Postby divx118 » Thu Aug 27, 2009 7:54 pm

Well now that I finally found a nice 10 foot photo viewer XBMC . I need to really get my photos organized in folders so that they easily can be tagged.
Now I thought of the following structure:

Photos from a day out in the zoo in Arnhem on 23 june 2006 would be "20060623 Zoo Arnhem"
Photos from a short trip (shorter then a week) to disneyland paris started at 01 june 2009 would be "20090601 Disneypark Paris"
Photos from longer trips 5 weeks Indonesia started at 02 march 2006 would be "20060302 Indonesia week 1" then "20060309 Indonesia week 2" etc
Now I have also allot of photos that I make on no special occasions I was just thinking of putting them all together in a folder first day of the year "20080101 everything else"

It would be nice to hear what is used by other people.

My next question,
I want to use Picasa to tag my photos. Unfortunately they only have face recognition on the webalbums available (which works very well). So I am looking for an alternative to auto tag my photos with face recognition software.
Does anyone know a good inexpensive one that can do this.
For the normal tags (like places etc) Picasa will do the job.

Thanks,

Wow. I wish I was that organized :)

I just have

1990/holidays/someplace/xxx
2009/landscape/someplace/yyy
1998/kids/xxx

stuff like that. I only started being consistent with filenames in the last year or so. I have ten thousand photos with stupid names like `img02343.jpg'.

So I'm in not position to offer advice :)

I only started being consistent with filenames in the last year or so. I have ten thousand photos with stupid names like `img02343.jpg'.

I wouldn't bother renaming the photos, IMO tagging them would be better.

Well my photos are also not renamed so they also are named like P1040749.JPG or the older ones RIMG1381.JPG . They are all in folders, but spread over some backup cd's and harddisk. They are however somewhat organized in folders, but I wasn't very consistent in naming the folders. Before I just did something like copy a whole SD-card or before a mmc card to my harddrive and named the folder the date I copied the card, not when I took the photo's and no description.
I must say organizing them like I said above doesn't take too much time. I am already half way through my 30Gb in a couple of hours. Tagging them and deleting the unwanted photos will take allot more time, but it will be easier when they are already nicely organized in folders.
By starting the folder name with yyyymmdd will get them nicely organized as a timeline.

Unfortunately I didn't find any suitable face recognition program, maybe google will add that feature sometime in the offline Picasa organizer.

I think some good advice to the starters is:
- Don't be afraid to throw away photos
- Setup a good directory structure from the start
- Be careful not to loose the EXIF data from your photos

Tagging is also a whole different story, there are allot of ways you can do this. What is the best, I still need to find out :? This far I think the best way is to add keywords in the EXIF data so that you will not be bound to your photo organizer program.
